New Delhi: A party formed in the name of former chief minister the late YS Rajasekhara Reddy (YSR), a Congressman, is now threatening to come in the way of the Congress's hat trick in Andhra Pradesh as well as the Centre.

Apart from defeat in 15 of the 18 assembly seats that went to polls in the state, what is stunning for the Congress is the margin of 291,745 votes by which the party's candidate lost the Nellore Lok Sabha seat.

YSR Congress chief Jagan Mohan Reddy, YSR's son, had won the Kadapa bypoll last year by 540,000 votes after leaving the Congress following a bitter fight.

After the results on Friday, analysts said a few more Congress MPs might soon resign and join Jagan's party.

While Rajasekhara Reddy sent 29 Congress MPs in 2004 and 33 in 2009 to the Lok Sabha, Jaganmohan's agenda would be quite the opposite.

"Going by the momentum, Jaganmohan without difficulty could win 20 out of 42 (Lok Sabha) seats in 2014 and a few more if he could gain more ground in Telangana," said K Nageshwar, political analyst and professor of journalism, Osmania University.

Though in an interview to HT last year Jaganmohan had said he was not averse to supporting even a Congress coalition "in the state's interest", it is to be seen how the equations shift after his recent arrest by the CBI in a disproportionate assets case.

"There is a possibility that the Congress could bury the hatchet with him," said Nageshwar.
